The Craftsman Platinum series is comprised of walk-behind, power-propelled rotary lawn mowers. 'Platinum' refers to a series of Briggs & Stratton engines that are manufactured for Craftsman lawn mowers. Platinum engines are equipped with or without engine primer bulbs that make starting the lawn mower engine easier in cold weather. The rubber primer bulb pushes fuel through the carburetor into the combustion chamber to help the engine start easier. Platinum lawnmower models without a primer are more difficult -- but not impossible -- to start.

Check the lawnmower engine oil before starting the engine to prevent damage to the internal rotating engine parts. Twist the engine oil fill tube cap; pull the engine oil dipstick that is attached to the oil fill cap from the engine oil fill tube. Add 30-W engine oil until the oil reaches the full mark on the dipstick.

Push the rubber primer bulb in on the side of the lawnmower engine carburetor five times by hand to start a cold engine. A cold engine is simply one that hasn't been started or operated recently, not one left out in cold weather. The rubber primer bulb pushes fuel through the carburetor into the combustion chamber to help the engine start easier. This step is not necessary when starting a engine that that is still warm from previous operation. Skip this step if your Platinum mower doesn't have a primer bulb.

Pull the operator control bar up to the lawnmower handle with one hand and hold. The operator control bar shuts the engine off when released and will not allow the engine to start until the control bar is again placed against the lawnmower handle.

Grip the lawnmower engine starter pull rope handle firmly in your free hand. Pull the engine starter rope quickly to start the lawnmower engine. Allow the rope to gently recoil into the starter-rope handle bracket. Do not allow the rope to snap back harshly when starting; this can result in damage to the engine starter rope and recoil assembly. Repeat this step until the lawnmower engine starts.
